The Growing ‘Wealth-Poverty Gap’: How Prosperity and Hardship Are Found Cheek by Jowl in England.

In Nunsthorpe, residents occupy properties just several yards from their wealthier counterparts in nearby Scartho. One six-foot-tall barricade literally separates the two areas in the town of Grimsby, sealing off roads and walkways that once linked them.

“This is the divide between rich and poor,” remarked Serenity Colley, 37. “It’s been like this for as long as I’ve known. I don’t think they’ll take it down because I don’t think they’ll want to mix with us.”

An Increasingly Common National Picture

Data from government figures reveals how deep inequality often exists, at times across little more than a few metres of asphalt, a line of hedges or a barrier. Decades of austerity and underinvestment have led to a situation where almost two-thirds of local authorities now contain a locality classified as one of the most deprived in the nation.

This spread of poverty has coincided with a significant rise in the quantity of places where disadvantaged and affluent people find themselves living side by side. Just a few years ago, just 65 of the most deprived areas bordered one of the least deprived. This number increased to 119 in the latest data.

A Wall That Divides More Than Space

In Grimsby, the gap is the biggest in the country and painfully apparent. The wall transcends being just a symbolic division; it causes tangible difficulties for daily routines.

  • School runs that should take 15-20 minutes become an sixty-minute journey.
  • Access to important amenities like grocery stores, educational facilities and employment centres is made more difficult.
  • The site can attract antisocial behaviour, with reports of rubbish being thrown over the wall and related problems.

“People strive to maintain a well-kept home and garden, and then you live opposite that,” said one resident, motioning at the rusted metal wall.

Community Spirit Against a Backdrop of Hardship

Within Centre4, staff stress that need does not recognise postcodes. “Your postcode is not a reliable indicator of your level of challenge,” explained director Tracey Good.

Regardless of ranking in the lowest 10% for multiple deprivation indicators, Nunsthorpe retains a strong sense and feeling of community among its inhabitants. By contrast, Scartho is classified among the least deprived 10% overall.

A Similar Story: Stanhope in Ashford

This pattern is mirrored nationally. The Stanhope area in Ashford, Kent, a mid-century overspill estate, is in the 10% most deprived of areas in England. It is closely bordered by spacious detached homes built in the early 2000s that sit in the wealthiest tenth for employment and quality of surroundings.

“They might have larger properties, but here there’s a stronger community,” commented Phil Hockley, 63. “You’ll probably find many people over there don’t even speak to each other.”

The financial gap is evident: an typical family home sells for about £275,000 on the Stanhope estate, while across the divide equivalent properties go for about £410,000.

Locals speak of a palpable sense of neglect. “This part of the community is neglected,” said resident Susan Riley-Nevers. “In this area our amenities have slowly been taken away, and the majority of the issues we face here are related to financial hardship.”

The increase in these ‘deprivation divides’ presents a portrait of an ever more divided England, where prosperity and need are frequently awkwardly close neighbours.
