The actress and writer on her side-splitting show portraying that grotty appeal of today's youth life
The star enters the online meeting and right away begins an explanation. “Oh my God – I’m sorry!” she exclaims, appearing genuinely remorseful. Although she's only slightly late, she wants to justify. “My phone conversations always run long.” “Earlier calls made me late—I just can’t stop chatting!” Luckily, for a writer, that’s precisely what you want to encounter. Additionally, it’s pretty expected. Viewers familiar with her boldly queer and outspoken film Bottoms—that Sennott collaborated on with her creative partner and starred in with close companion the talented actress—would understand that she has a lot to share, whether about gender, relationships, or the appeal of starting a youth combat group. Plus, after watching her recent multi-episode show I Love LA, it becomes obvious that she has even more perspectives about the challenges of Gen Z life (At 30, Sennott is an honorary member for this generation, on the cusp skilled for bridging millennials and Gen Z).
Inspirations and Creative Vision
The comparisons to Lena Dunham’s Girls are inevitable and Sennott is a fan, naming it alongside the HBO hit, Insecure and Atlanta as guides for I Love LA, which details the travails of a social media star played by Odessa A’Zion and close companion who is also fledgling agent Maia. Perhaps, the biggest spot on creative vision went to the HBO series, that show about an emerging A-list actor succeeding in a gritty LA scene (choice quote: “happiness eludes everyone but failures in this city”). She discovered it amid the pandemic, became “captivated”, and chose to create a new version on it “targeting women and LGBTQ+ viewers”.
“My aim was to focus on digital fame over traditional entertainment, as my own beginnings were on the web,” she explains. The concept for the series originated—partly—from her own, originally rocky, transition to LA and from her cosmic event, a popular occurrence for enthusiasts. That period marked a phase that saw her grasp major truths, professionally and individually. “During my younger years, I was chaotic, often breaking down in public,” she says. “In my mid-20s, I moved to LA and got settled. And then I felt like everything started to just fall apart. “It resembled a series of extreme challenges…”
Humble Origins
Growing up in the East Coast, the star began developing and showcasing stand-up while studying theatre at a prestigious arts school. “I went through all the proper channels to try to perform, and they weren’t gelling,” she states. “I tried out for all the NYU comedy groups, and got rejected from all of them. “None of the university plays cast me either.” “It left me questioning my purpose and place.”
She decided to act independently, performing at amateur nights with Edebiri and uploading uproarious (and very) bizarre skits digitally. A particular video, titled Baby Cult, centered on several females intensely drawn to having babies; another portrayed being employed at the preppy clothing store Hollister as like being trapped in a thriller. Interestingly, she connected with Emma through the university’s film scene and ultimately featuring in her initial project, Shiva Baby, a tense dramedy set at a Jewish wake with shades of the intense thriller. The central motif of her path, she notes, has been people her own age supporting her, as opposed to traditional networks. Does that mean bypassing the usual powers? “Definitely not them”, she emphasizes, stating humorously: “They don’t want us to win.”
Manifesting Dreams
Individuals who had doubts regarding Sennott earlier will likely be regretting it currently. As part of she calls a “wild, full-circle” story, she appears to achieved an ideal role. A few years back she uploaded a clip titled on LA life on the internet, in which she parodied film promos (“I’m addicted to drugs – we all are”). Years later, she’s a lead creator (with the co-writer) of a show about city dwellers juggling advantages of digital stardom (such as partying at a celebrity’s house) with its pitfalls (your friend being accused of being a drug-addled stealer, and possibly becoming a unreliable pariah). It would be easy to produce a program about online fame that was overly aspirational—or, worse, one that mocked at its subjects. This show steers clear of each, creating a depiction of privileged twentysomething living that’s candid about the chaos and the shine.
