Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.
