Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.
