European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
