Discovering the Written Legacy of Novelist Paul Bailey
Esteemed author Paul Bailey, whose life ended last autumn at 87, was renowned for possessing a comic brilliance, intense sympathy extending to his deeply imperfect creations, and a sharpness that avoided being sterile. The Ones to Make You Laugh and Cry
Paul Bailey authored brilliantly about aging, early and late in his career. His first book the novel At the Jerusalem (from 1967) details the journey of Faith Gadny as she adjusts to a care facility, in which other inhabitants provide kindness absent in employees, whose concern via queries “Aren’t you watching television?”. In the novel before his final Chapman’s Odyssey (2011), an aged patient moves between arguing with doctors (“I consume only fine wines”, he affirms when scolded for liver results) and being flooded by memories of his mother, lovers, literary figures including Pip by Dickens and Emma by Austen. Each volume contain comic interactions yet shadowed by the inevitable conclusion. In his stories, grins are unreliable. Within At the Jerusalem, “the matron beamed, then stopped suddenly”; The character giggles with unease upon challenge to her conduct. In that novel, Harry warns that “my grins are misleading”. Your laughter, nonetheless, is sincere.
If You Want the Facts Behind the Fiction
Besides novels, Paul Bailey served as a gifted memoirist, publishing two autobiographies. An Immaculate Mistake (from 1990) is a masterwork of reminiscence, its title derived from his parent’s remark calling him “our error” and saying he shouldn’t exist. (“Elderly, she disclosed hidden truths,” he comments. “This one, she knew, would be of particular interest to me.”) Within these pages appear the sources for confused, affectionate, irritating parental figures in his novels. It likewise portrays a beautiful image of a gay youth during the mid-20th century, during a time of anti-gay laws, and his kin viewed it as suspicious for a boy to buy his mother flowers; and of a would-be thespian (The writer was on stage before writing) who could recite Hamlet as a teen. His subsequent life story A Dog’s Life (published in 2004) concentrates on life with his mongrel puppy Circe, his ex-partner David, his affection for Romania—which motivated future works including Kitty and Virgil, Uncle Rudolf, plus the book The Prince’s Boy—and loads of chatter, including a tale regarding Iris Murdoch dubbing a participant a “foolish person”.
If You’re Pressed for Time
The author’s fiction are generally brief—the impactful Old Soldiers (published in 1980) is barely 100 pages—however, for a more condensed choice, sample his verse in his final phase. The two collections Inheritance (from 2019) and Joie de Vivre (2022) exhibit Bailey’s wit, empathy, precision in small packages. These writings are rich with death and life. Two romantic motifs repeat: regarding his mum (“I’m closer to you now – / I need to tell you – / than I ever was in life”) and for his partner Jeremy Trevathan. In that piece, he depicts the pleasure in enjoying “foolish television” side by side, ending with: “It’s remarkable, this simple act of consuming cheese and wine as darkness falls.”
When Choosing Just One
Most agree that the author’s most expansive book is Gabriel’s Lament, shortlisted for the Booker prize in 1986. (He also judged the prize in 1982, a role he disliked.) This was the book Bailey felt proudest of, although “it exhausted him completely”. It tells the tale of Gabriel Harvey, with a missing mother and a father who becomes an insufferable elitist following a financial windfall, with possible connections. It acts as a representation of 20th-century London, a tale of emotional unraveling, and both comic and tragic as anything Bailey wrote. Additionally, it prompted a follow-up, Sugar Cane (1993), that he investigated by attending brothels to observe.
