The tally of fatalities due to the UPS cargo plane which burst into flames and crashed has now risen to 13, according to latest statements.
Mayor's Statement
Traveling to the Teamsters’ candlelight gathering, I received word of a thirteenth victim that passed away as a result of the plane accident,” stated the local official in a social media post. “My thoughts is with the families, associates and peers of all who were killed in this week’s disaster. We will get through this as one.”
Casualties Named
An announcement from the company named the officers operating the aircraft as Captain Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.
“Our sympathies reach out to all UPSer who has been touched and all in our Louisville region – assisting you and making sure you receive the support and resources you need is our main concern,” the company’s communication expressed.
Inquiry Findings
Federal authorities revealed that the UPS cargo plane’s wing ignited and an engine fell off shortly after takeoff from the airfield, resulting in the plane to plummet and explode into a fireball.
The National Transportation Safety Board stated it is investigating the aircraft’s maintenance history, that was in Texas for repairs weeks prior to the incident.
Flight tracking information revealed the plane was on the runway in the Texas city from early September to mid-October.
“We are cognizant that this aircraft was located in San Antonio,” stated an investigator on later, not giving a precise period. “We will review every piece of maintenance that was completed, from the Texas visit, right up to the day of the trip.”
Recovery of Critical Evidence
The audio device and flight data recorder were recovered, and the motor was located on the tarmac.
The units – called flight recorders – were built to survive collision damage and severe temperatures from blazes, and they looked to be intact when discovered amid the crash debris. Officials plan on reviewing information from the recorders.
Jet’s concluding flight details indicated an altitude of that level and a rate of that speed ahead of the accident.
Repair History
According to FAA records dated that date, a fracture on a component inside the tank area needed maintenance.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which said it supplies airframe maintenance for the company’s aircraft and manages a repair facility in that city, refused to comment, but stated it would work closely when relevant authorities contacted it.
Operations Resume
At the same time, UPS Worldport services restarted Wednesday night with its overnight or nighttime procedure, spokesperson Jim Mayer confirmed. The three tarmacs at the aviation hub were additionally reopened.
The UPS package handling facility in this location is the firm’s largest. The hub engages over a large number of people in the region, processes three hundred trips daily and processes in excess of 400,000 items an hour.
Community Support
A memorial was held on the late afternoon of 6 November by the local Teamsters Union, which acts for employees at the aviation hub, the firm’s biggest shipping facility.
Worker representatives, which supports UPS workers, started the vigil with a moment of silence at 5.14pm, the estimated moment of the crash previously.
“This event was so sudden, so unforeseen,” the leader told the assembly of attendees. “No one had a moment to bid farewell to any of those who we have said farewell to.”
