British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
