A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
